Om 06.30 uur waren Chris en Marianne reeds wakker, de koffers werden gereorganiseerd en Chris (flightsimulatorfanaat) kon zijn geluk niet op vanwege het uitzicht vanaf onze hotelkamer op het vliegveld van Miami.
Om 09.00 uur ontbijten in ons hotel. Nou ontbijt, dat stelt in Amerika dus niets voor. Ons ontbijt bestond volgens Chris uit murfins. Na het ontbijt de koffers in de auto laden en gaan met die banaan. Om het wegennet in de States te kennen moet je al wat langer aanwezig zijn. Toen we dus een half uurtje om ons hotel heen hadden gecirkeld, vonden we de juiste weg naar de Keys.
Toch wel wat hongerig na zo’n schamel ontbijt besloten we wat te gaan eten. We vonden geen winkel en geen eettentje, behalve Burger King. Daar gaan we dan, reeds op de eerste dag zo vroeg al aan de fast food.
Onze tweede stop die dag was een bezoek aan het State Park John Pennekamp Coral Reef. Een prachtig natuurgebied met uitgebreide mogelijkheden om te snorkelen. Je moest dan wel een bootje huren die je dan na zo’n vier uur weer terug zou brengen. Nou aan die tijd ontbrak het ons, dus besloten we bij het door ons gevonden strandje te snorkelen.
Meerdere mensen waren op dat idee gekomen. Maar zij hadden wel waterschoenen aan. Dus van snorkelen in deze zee met scherpe stenen kwam niet veel terecht.
Na een klein uurtje zonnen togen wij op weg om volgens de Capitool Reisgids het mooiste strand van Amerika te bezoeken in het Bahia Honda State Park. We vonden een strandje, we hebben er gezwommen en gezond, maar we hebben wel eens mooiere stranden gezien. Amerikanen houden dus van overdrijven.
De weg naar Key West over tientallen eilanden met zeer lange bruggen over werkelijk schitterend blauw water was geweldig.
Om 17.00 uur kwamen wij aan in ons hotel Quality Inn, waar voor ons de kamers 236 en 238 waren gereserveerd. ’s Avonds bezochten we het stadje waar we heerlijk hebben gegeten bij het Hard Rock Cafe en brachten een bezoek aan Sloppy Joe, het favoriete stamcafé van Ernst Hemmingway.
Key West staat bekend om z’n mooie zonsondergang op Mallory Square en onder begeleiding van een muzikant die zeer toepasselijke muziek speelde op het terras waar wij ons bevonden, hebben we de zon in de zee zien zakken.
Als toetje trakteerde Edwin ons op een wandelingetje naar de parkeerplaats waar wij onze auto hadden gestald. Via, via, na vele omwegen kwamen we wat later dan gepland bij de auto aan. Om 22.30 uur doken we doodmoe ons bed in.
