Vandaag is onze laatste dag in The USA. We hebben nog één dag om die heerlijke amerikaanse sfeer te proeven. We besloten naar Fort Lauderdale te gaan naar shoppingmall Shawgrass Mills.
We hadden al wat grote malls gezien maar deze spande echt de kroon. We hadden ongeveer drie uur gelopen en toen nog maar 2/3 van het hele centrum bezocht. Ook hier werden weer kleren en schoenen gekocht.
Tussen de middag aten we heerlijk chinees en toen besloten we nog eenmaal ons hotel op te zoeken voor een allerlaatste bezoekje aan het prachtige strand. Het blijven toch vreselijke lange afstanden die je elke dag maar weer moet afleggen. Het weer was ook vandaag weer prachtig en die zee was overheerlijk.
’s Avonds aten we nog wat in de hotelkamer en toen moesten we echt pakken. Om 19.30 uur aanvaardden wij de tocht naar het vliegveld waar eerst de auto ingeleverd moest worden.
We kwamen daarop een parkeerterrein van Avis. We werden daar keurig onthaald door een medewerker van Avis met een apparaatje in z’n hand die keurig de streepjescode op onze voorruit scande. We waren de auto nog niet uitgestapt of de medewerker heette ons en vooral “Christian met een how are you” van harte welkom. Koffers uitladen, sleutels inleveren en op naar de shuttlebus die ons naar het vliegveld zou brengen.
Daar waren we binnen vijf minuten. Nu kon het wachten beginnen. Ook hier moesten we weer vier uur voor vertrek aanwezig zijn. De koffers werden voor het inchecken niet gecontroleerd, maar ons werd op het hart gedrukt de bagage niet op slot te doen, want er zouden steekproeven worden genomen en sommige koffers zouden worden onderworpen aan een onderzoek.
En ja hoor, Marsha was de pineut. Bij thuiskomst bleek dat ze haar zorgvuldig ingepakte koffer grondig hadden doorzocht. We aten voor de allerlaatste keer in de States nog wat junkfood en toen moesten we nog door de douane.
We konden nog net onze kleren aanhouden, maar de boys moesten hun schoenen uit doen en Edwin moest zelfs zijn riem van z’n broek afdoen. Wij mochten er niet bij blijven staan kijken en ons werd gesommeerd vooral door te lopen.
Maar het allerleukste was toch wel dat Marianne die op de heenweg iedereen keurig had verteld vooral geen scherpe voorwerpen in de handbagage mee te nemen, door de douaniers eruit gepikt werd omdat in haar beautycase een grote schaar werd aangetroffen. Door het knippen van de vele pleisters gedurende onze trip is die schaar per abuis in de beautycase terecht gekomen. We waren alleen de schaar kwijt, maar de boete van een paar honderd dollar (lazen we toen we verder liepen) hoefden we niet te betalen.
Na lang wachten konden we eindelijk ons plaatsje in het vliegtuig bezetten. Ons Martinairtoestel vertrok uiteindelijk een half uur eerder dan gepland, dus om 00.30 uur. Da’s boffen.
Het werd oook dit keer weer een lange zit. En aangezien het nacht was bleven gedurende bijna de hele vlucht de luikjes voor de ramen naar beneden en de lichten uit. Als je dan al wilde lezen kwam daar in het donker niets van. Ook dit keer kregen we tweemaal een maaltijd voorgeschoteld.
Uiteindelijk landden we eerder dan gepland, de vlucht duurde nu maar 8 ½ uur. Op Schiphol hadden we na aankomst om 15.30 uur binnen twintig miunuten alle formaliteiten afgehandeld. Paspoortcontrole, koffers ophalen en douane.
Eindelijk weer onze voeten op Nederlandse bodem. We werden weer netjes door Thea en Ton en Theo thuis afgezet, nadat we eerst nog zo’n klein halfuurtje in een onvervalste Nederlandse file hadden gestaan.
Jippie we waren weer thuis.
